More expertise, better chances of survival

APB News and Advocacy

In Belgium, patients with rare or complex cancers are still too often treated in hospitals without sufficient specialised experience. Yet recent evidence shows clearly: the greater the expertise, the better the chances of survival.

Why expertise matters so much

In complex cancers, experience makes a world of difference. Doctors and teams who regularly treat the same conditions build deep knowledge. That allows them to reach the right diagnosis faster, make better treatment choices, limit complications and ultimately improve survival.

Not every patient ends up in the right place

As experts also point out, healthcare providers are not always fully aware of every specialised option. As a result, patients sometimes remain in a care pathway that is not optimal.

That is a problem, because rare cancers require specific expertise, multidisciplinary teams are often necessary, and outcomes are demonstrably better in specialised centres.

Centralisation works – but is moving too slowly

Belgium has taken steps towards centralising certain cancer treatments, but progress remains slow. Yet specialised centres achieve better outcomes, experience is directly linked to survival, and patients are entitled to the best care available.

What needs to change?

To improve survival, it is essential that patients are referred more quickly, that expertise is further centralised, that collaboration between hospitals is strengthened, and that patients are better informed about their options.

Our message

At ALK Positive Belgium we believe every patient is entitled to the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

  • More expertise means more chances.
  • More collaboration means better care.
  • And better care saves lives.
